Asia Regional Solidarity Campaign for Hong Kong

Global June 4th Global Mourning for the Tiananmen Square Massacre

In solidarity with democracy groups in Hong Kong and across Asia, the Asia Democracy Network is launching and participating in a regional campaign to stand in solidarity with the recent events in Hong Kong. We encourage all of you to join us!

On May 28, 2020 the Chinese parliament passed the national security law for Hong Kong, signaling an end to Hong Kong’s autonomy. Despite the global outcry condemning the move and calling to ensure the One Country Two Systems constitutional principle for the Special Administrative Regions.

China has taken advantage of the timing of the global pandemic to strike against democracy in Hong Kong. While the world is pre-occupied fighting the pandemic, it continued to oppress the people of Hong Kong. Furthermore, citing special Covid-19 measures the Hong Kong administration has banned all memorial vigils for the Tiananmen Square Massacre, for the first time in 30 years.

We call on our democracy advocates across the region to join us in our Solidarity for Hong Kong Campaign. The ADN will be conducting an online campaign condemning the National Security Law for Hong Kong and a Candlelight Vigil for June 4th Memorial of Tiananmen Square Massacre.

  1. Facebook/Instagram Live Campaign

We call on our friends to go live on Facebook and or Instagram on June 4th at 8pm Hong Kong time and for an hour go live to stand solidarity and commemorate those lost during the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Please use this description in the post:

Title: Light a Candle for the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre Victims

Description: As we commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, we light a candle for the victims of this grave event. We, as advocates of human rights and democracy, light this virtual candle in remembrance of the sacrifices of those who were victimized by human rights abuses in China and all over the world. We hope that the sacrifice of so many lives will not be repeated.

Instructions on how to do the live:

  1. To access the one-hour candle video, please go to this Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poNHx_rCf_Y&t=40s
