On January 3, Vietnamese authorities have detained Ho Sy Quyet and his wife for “reading and introducing some books made by the unregistered Liberal Publishing House,” according to the reports of Defend the Defenders. An interview with a prominent dissent writer, Pham Doan Trang revealed that Ho Sy Quyet’s house was raided by plain clothed police officers without showing any search warrant.
After taking them to the police station, police confiscated their items including computer, camera, cell phones and bank cards as well as some books published by the Liberal Publishing House. The three books he possessed were: ‘Learn about Policy Making Through the Special Economic Zones’, ‘Ba Sàm’ and ‘Non-violent Resistance’. Ho Sy Quyet was released after nine hours of interrogation and his family members are still under police surveillance, according to Vietnam Human Rights Defenders weekly report.
Ho Sy Quyet released a statement in regards to his detention and confiscation of his belongings, demanding the authorities to return the confiscated items and to follow the due process of law before conducting a house search.
