On March 18, the Malaysian government activated the Movement Control Order (MCO), a set of preventive measures under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act of 1988 and the Police Act of 1967. Shortly after, the country saw a spike in confirmed coronavirus cases following a mass gathering of Islamic missionaries and followers attended by 16,000 people, most of whom were residents of Malaysia.
