The Philippine government has been criticized for its militaristic response to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the support of the armed forces and police personnel, the country currently has the second strictest response to the coronavirus in Southeast Asia, next to Myanmar. President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire island of Luzon under an enhanced community quarantine on March 17, following the sudden spike in local cases. The directive effectively prohibited citizens from going out of their homes, except to access food and other essential services.
