The bad and the bad about Pakistan’s internet
Rights advocates say that Pakistan’s frequent state-instigated Internet shutdowns and slowdowns are nothing less than rights violations.
Pakistan was initially ranked by the World Health Organization as one of the 10 countries with the highest numbers of Covid-19 cases, and was thus urged by the global health body to ramp up its testing capacity. A month later, in July, cases began to drop significantly – which health experts promptly attributed to fewer tests while the government ascribed it to a policy of “smart lockdowns.” As of mid-July, there were already at least 250,000 coronavirus cases and 5,500 deaths.
