The Asia Democracy Network (ADN) welcomes the successful completion of South Korea’s presidential election and congratulates President Lee Jae-myung on his election.
Despite the extraordinary circumstances following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, the people of Korea have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to democratic values by demanding change and ensuring a peaceful transition of power.
The election was marked by transparency and a notably high level of public engagement, with voter turnout reaching nearly 80%—one of the highest rates in recent decades. This reflects the strength and resilience of South Korea’s democratic institutions, as well as the active civic spirit of its people.
This election marks an important milestone in a series of events that have tested the country’s democratic institutions. In response to the former president Yoon’s imposition of martial law in late 2024, South Korea’s National Assembly moved decisively to impeach him, upholding constitutional order through institutional processes. These developments unfolded alongside widespread and peaceful public protests, demonstrating a clear demand from citizens for democratic accountability.
The outcome of the snap election reflects the ability of institutions and civil society to respond to a crisis in ways that preserved public trust in the system. At a time when democratic backsliding is on the rise in many parts of the world, South Korea’s experience offers valuable lessons on the importance of political accountability, civic mobilization, and adherence to legal norms.
At the same time, the election also takes place against the backdrop of deep political divisions and growing polarization challenges that will require ongoing attention from political leaders, institutions, and the public alike.
South Korea has long played a vital role in the region, and its recent democratic transition further underscores its potential to make meaningful contributions to global efforts to protect and advance democracy. We hope this new chapter under President Lee Jae-myung will not only strengthen democratic values domestically but also reaffirm South Korea’s role as a regional and global leader in democratic solidarity.
We call on the new administration to further empower civil society and deepen democratic governance, thereby positioning South Korea as a key driver of democracy promotion, not only in Asia but globally.
