The foreign ministers of the six countries in Mongolia jointly called on the Taliban to end policies and practices that restrict women and girls from exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The call was made during the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, Indonesia, Liechtenstein, Mongolia and South Africa at the Female Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Ulaanbaatar on June 29-30.
The statement “urged the Taliban to immediately change policies that prevent women and girls from exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms, including their access to education, employment, freedom of movement and their full and meaningful participation in public life.”
The statement also calls on all states and organizations to use their influence, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, to promote an urgent end to these policies and practices.
In response to this statement, the Taliban stated that “efforts are being made to provide women with opportunities for education and work based on Sharia law”.
The statement comes as high schools have been closed to girls for the past nearly two years and female students have been banned from university since December last year. #
